4 things to consider when choosing your travel system

Choosing your travel system is a super exciting part of preparing for your baby, however, it can be a little overwhelming to know which is the best for you. If you’re feeling this way, you’re in the right place as we are going to go over all the things to think about when it comes to choosing your perfect travel system.

  1. Budget
First and foremost has got to be your budget. Deciding how much you’d like to spend on your travel system can streamline your options and ensure you’re only investing your time in trying travel systems that are suitable for you.
Whether shopping online or in a store, you can either filter your search results or advise your shop assistant of your budget and that way you will be pointed in the right direction.
  2. Type of travel system
You will find a range of different travel system bundles when you start your search. Most will be defined by either a 3-in-1 travel system or a 2-in-1 travel system.

“So what is a 3-in-1 travel system?” I hear you say!
A 3 in 1 travel system (sometimes called an all-in-1) means you will get your carrycot, car seat, stroller seat and chassis (frame) in one bundle and all 3 seats fit onto the chassis. This often means your travel system will be a matching set and you can tick it all off in one purchase. A 3-in-1 offers convenience as you can transition from the car to walking and vice-versa with ease in the first few months, with your infant carrier car seat fitting onto your chassis.

“Okay, so what is a 2-in-1 travel system?”
A 2-in-1 travel system means you will get your chassis, carrycot and stroller seat in a bundle, but not your car seat.
Why choose a 2-in-1 travel system?
Choosing a 2-in-1 travel system is a good idea if you already have a car seat or would like to buy a different car seat to pair with your desired pram. Sometimes parents prefer the idea of a car seat that covers a wider, suitable age range that the typical Group 0+ infant carrier that comes with a 3-in-1 travel system.

Something to consider – some retailers will offer travel system bundles that include a car seat from a different brand (which also fit’s onto the chassis with adapters) so it’s worth taking a look at those if you’re favouring one brand of car seat and favouring a different brand for your pram.

  3. Consider what type of wheels you will need for you lifestyle
Generally, chassis will either feature bigger, tough wheels for ‘all-terrains’ or smaller, thinner, more agile wheels for city lifestyle. We recommend opting for travel system featuring all-terrain wheels if you’re likely to do a lot of off road walking, if you live in the country side, or frequently visit places like the beach or towns with uneven or cobbled ground.
A great system we would recommend for all terrains is the Inglesina Aptica XT featuring adaptive cruise and large, hard wearing tyres that have a unique multi-layer construction, meaning they adapt to surfaces and reduce vibrations for the little passenger!

Whereas if you’re living in the city or tend to stick to paved walks, a smaller wheeled chassis would be practical for your lifestyle and help you get about efficiently – a perfect fit for families who are always on the go.
If this sounds like you, you might prefer something like the Silver Cross Dune – lightweight and compact, without compromising on style and comfort. With enhanced suspension to tackle busy streets and tight corners.

Something else to consider – Whilst all travel systems are cleverly crafted to be as compact and lightweight as possibly; this style of travel system is also likely to be much lighter on the whole making it easier to lift in and out of the car or carry from place to place.
  4. Boot size
Finally, and arguably most importantly, your boot size. And no, not the size of your shoes! Your car boot size has to be considered when choosing your travel system. It would be rather disappointing to fall in love with a travel system, only to find out it won’t fit into your car boot.
Don’t worry though, when shopping here in-store with us, you can carry out a boot check with any of our travel systems on display to be sure you’ve got the right fit! If you’re reading this and thinking ‘my boot is so small, I don’t know if any of them would ever fit in my boot’ – think again!
Several of our travel systems have been ‘boot checked’ in cars such as Vauxhall Corsa’s and Fiat 500’s and we also have plenty of alternate options if a whole travel system bundle just isn’t going to work for you.
